This role is responsible for leading on business development with funders, institutions and government bodies within the research performing organisation sector for F1000 Research and other Taylor and Francis Researcher Services. The post holder will work in close collaboration with senior sales and editorial staff; marketing teams and the Managing Director of the F1000 business unit, as well as other T&F stakeholders. Their goal will be to deliver revenue and support profit objectives; develop strategic customer relationships with relevant bodies, and, under direction of T&F sales leaders, ensure we maximise opportunities to provide holistic solutions across the wider portfolio.  

What you'll be doing:

  • Design with key stakeholders, and get approval for, a 1-3 year business plan, ensuring that activity is both relevant and flexible to the evolving trading environment over time
  • Establish, maintain and develop high level relationships with key customer groups; researchers and research leaders, funders, societies and institutions, commercial, professional and academic as well as government and regulatory bodies
  • Achieve and exceed annual targets, delivering revenue and support profit objectives within the region
  • Under direction of T&F sales leaders and the F1000 Research management team, identify and execute strategic activity projects
  • Report monthly to key stakeholders within T&F and F1000 on progress and the business environment; this monitoring enabling responsiveness to both the micro and macro trading conditions
  • Drive compliance with company trading and terms policy, as well as editorial ethics, to protect profitability and value of business for the business unit
  • Actively liaise with other stakeholder departments or groups within the business to enhance T&F's coverage in the region
  • Continually developing the T&F brand and profile, building increasing awareness across the region by representation externally e.g. on working party groups or through networks, maintaining a presence and information gathering role on the scholarly environment
  • Generating and seeking out potential new opportunities in products, services and partnerships

What we're looking for: 

  • A breadth of experience across the industry, in different organisations, subject areas and in-depth knowledge of own designated region
  • Experience of taking a lead on long-term projects to deliver against objectives, including a focus on new business
  • Considerable knowledge of the Open Science/Research space; the academic publishing industry and the wider scholarly eco-system
  • A firm grasp of strategic issues affecting the global research sector 
  • Excellent networking skills to keep internal stakeholders involved in all areas of planning, as well as building external relationships for a strong commercial pipeline
  • Hands-on experience to co-publish journals with Chinese society, institution or publisher
  • Practical experience in providing solution and service to Chinese funders such as CAST and NSFC
  • The ability to influence, drive for results and establish a clear agenda for their function
  • Resilience to pursue negotiations over an extended period with applicable committees and negotiating bodies
  • Strong ability to communicate appropriately and with enthusiasm, both upstream and downstream within the organisation, and externally with key customers
  • Confidence to speak with senior leaders within organisations on a 1-2-1 basis
  • Positive and flexible attitude, willing to take on many different types of tasks and apply to them the same level of effort and expertise
  • The ability to work independently and pro-actively, with awareness of when to make use of the wider infrastructure around them
  • Willingness to travel to meet customers, at conferences, events and at their organisation, as required to meet objectives
  • Target driven approach and the skills to manage business plans and delivery
  • A confident presenter (both formally and informally)
